Art by Lucas Leon
I’ve been embracing my inner fool as of late and this is an overarching intention for 2024. Not a resolution because that holds too much weight or pressure, but yet a light intention I carry with me from week to week.
“The Fool represents the archetype of freedom, humor, and new beginnings. This card embodies the spirit of the young adventurer, unburdened by expectations or attachments.
Being the only card numbered "0" in the deck, the Fool is not bound by any predefined identity or societal roles. He is free to explore the world with a sense of curiosity and openness. The Fool's lack of pride and ego allows him to navigate life's challenges with a lightheartedness that brings joy and resilience.”—Dr. Elliot Adams
I’ve known the meaning of the Fool for a long time, preaching it to various clients for years. I’ve implemented aspects of this energy, but this year I have a deeper understanding and kinship with the card. As an intuitive, it’s easy to fall into the rut of trying to control every facet of your life with tarot, raw intuition, astrology or other divination tools instead of living in the moment.
I’m learning to trust myself more, to take chances, to live in the moment and shed the skin of overthinking/paranoia. If something doesn’t work out, it’s okay, but at least I’ve experienced it for myself. Time to step off the chasm and see where the wind takes me…
Yoga Flow
I’ve been easing my way into yoga this week in an effort to loosen up my muscles. I knew I was stiff, but I had no idea how stiff my entire body has become. I hold a lot of tension in my back. I’ve done yoga in the past for stretches of time, basic yoga, hot yoga in random cities sweating my ass off, yoga in Spain down the street from my house, and yoga videos on youtube. I’m back on my youtube yoga grind and it’s definitely needed.
My work schedule’s kinda trash and I’ve been wanting to do something more intense like throwing kettlebells around and doing jiu jitsu, but that will come back in time. It just feels good moving my body again and feeling that burn travel through my musculature. I think it’s important for writers to get out of their heads and work their bodies…I’m telling you it always helps my creativity ten-fold.
Horror in the High Desert
I’ve been curious about Horror in the Desert for sometime and I finally took the plunge into the found footage horror flick a few days ago. A weird Youtube survivalist gets lost on a hike and the movie tries to connect the dots leading up to his disappearance. It feels like an episode of Unsolved Mysteries until the last quarter of the movie where the tension and true horror unfolds.
We see the missing survivalist pressured by his youtube following to go back into the desert and prove that what he found was real. This shot above gave me a severe flash of anxiety and is probably worth the slow-moving bits before this. Horror in the High Desert is ambitious and tries to carve out new territory in the found footage niche. It doesn’t quite live up to its lofty aspirations, but it’s worth a watch.
Saltburn
I’ve been hearing people rave almost non-stop about this Amazon original movie Saltburn so I had to see what the hype was about. It’s really about a college student’s desperate desire to be friends with the cool kid, but also attaching himself to the higher economic status that’s just out of his reach. If Parasite had a sub-genre, then Saltburn would belong to it. Idk I found it to be boring and meandering. It is full of pretty shots and great cinematography. Just not my cup of Oxford tea.
Writing Updates
Writing’s going really well. I started a new short story that I’m extremely excited about. And the ideas for Project Bunny Bloodbath have been coming in non-stop. I think the positive reception for Bullet Tooth is helping too. Makes me feel more confident in my writing and I feel like I can outdo myself with the current WIP. Like you guys fuck with this? Wait until you get a load of the new literary feast I’m cooking up.
I’m in the process of screening auditions for the audiobook narrator for Bullet Tooth and the process has been interesting to say the least. I made a five-minute video on Tiktok you can watch here.
Currently Watching: Love, Death & Robots Season 3 & Invincible Season 2 & Ballers Season 4
I can’t believe Invincible Season 2 is only four episodes long. It’s mind-boggling. The emotional beats are pitch-perfect and you can feel the show beginning to gain some real momentum. I know a Season 2 part 2 is coming, but it feels way too drawn out…
Currently Reading: Full Throttle by Joe Hill & Cosmic Horror Monthly #2 and Pedo Island Bloodbath by Duncan Ralston & Less Than Zero by Brett Easton Ellis and All Your Gods Are Dead by Gary McMahon (reread)
I made a video explaining the brilliance of An Altar of Stories to Liminal Saints by Rios de la Luz. Such a rich collection of magical realism revolving around the themes of motherhood, womanhood, and Mexican culture.
Currently Smoking: CLSCS Pre-roll
Listening: The Danny Brown Podcast, Back from the Borderline, The Higherside Chats, Agitator, Mutual Aberration Society, Victory Light, and Lost Xplorers
Kalis Uchis recently dropped an amazing dance album and “Igual Que Un Angel” is a standout single. The ethereal, bubble gum, saturated visuals feels like something plucked straight outta the 70s. Endangered hearts, staying in the realm of love despite a painful past…shit is so good.
Sauce Walka is prolly on of rap’s greatest hidden gems. The South’s been experiencing a quiet resurgent of talent and Sauce is no exception. Classic hiphop visuals combined with searing lyricism, passion, and storytelling makes this an amazing single.
City full of lollipops, stay away from suckers…
I’ve been keeping my eye on BabyDrill for a hot minute and ole boi’s been working on his craft and getting better. “What the Ticket” feels like intense declaration of the rapper standing on business and ready for whatever. This is fire.
Until next time…
