This week I’ve been crying like a motherfucker. First it started when I watched Encanto with my daughter. These kids are addicted to this movie. It’s as if someone sprinkled digital MSG & sugar into the narrative. I mean it worked on me too. It’s nice seeing more POC in movies these days, and it’s becoming less of a rarity. Really touched my heart thinking about future generations and how this will impact their confidence growing up.
The narrative sets things up so well with the Maribel character. I felt for her plight of feeling like she had nothing to offer and being a constant fuck-up. Of course, it’s a happy ending & she manages to bring the family together. Such a sweet ending.
Then came Euphoria Season 2. I was avoiding this show for a hot minute because I thought it was just a bunch of high schoolers doing drugs & having sex, but there’s so much more to it. I mean it is about sex and drugs, but it also explores the fleeting magic & wonder of youth, the loss of innocence, the horrors of drug addiction…Episode 5 alone is wild. Rue goes through a drug withdrawal and it’s such an emotional rollercoaster. I have a tendency to watch these episodes slightly high so the anxiety really hits me in the gut.
In other news, I turned in Black Gypsies to David for Broken River Books. Feels good to have this one done. Frees up some space in my head and I can really crack down on Project Bullet Baby this month.
I’m feeling like Uzi after David sent me my new chain, initiating me into the Broken River Book crew for life. These are the hidden perks of being a writer. I’ll unveil it later this year….
Currently Reading: Hunger for Death by Joshua Marsella
Finished Reading: Letting Out the Devils by Kelby Losack.
I managed to read LOTD in two days. Short punchy crime novella. Kelby’s really been on one lately creatively and manages to do something new with every literary outing. Plus, the OG Isaac Kirkman makes an appearance as a drug-dealing shaman. Well worth your time and money.
Currently Watching: Moon Knight & Atlanta Season 3
Currently Smoking: Jeeter Infused Blue Zkittles Pre-Roll
This pre-roll HITS. If you’re an indica fan like me, you need this in your life. One of my absolute favorite strains. A smooth heady high…
“Who’s gonna hold your hand when you’re dancing?”
Nebu Kiniza manages to create the spiritual successor to 50 Cent’s “21 Questions” in his romantic track “Questions” ft. Future. This came out in 2021, but it’s new to me and has been on repeat this entire week. Plus, this visualizer is real easy on the eyes…
Carlos Santana and FKJ meet in this lush jungle to bring an equally beautiful piece of music “Greener.” Just listen.
“I'ma mask up like Hannibal”
The Chicago native, Supa Bwe, goes crazy on this new track off his album NO THANKS. Raw, ferocious raps that get me in the right headspace for jiu jitsu. On a sidenote, Trippie Redd kinda bit his entire style back in the day.
It’s fight day specifically UFC 273 so I’m hyped. I’m rooting for The Korean Zombie to snatch that gold from Volkanovski. Let’s hope Petr Yan doesn’t cheat in the co-main event. You can watch the illegal knee below…
Khamzat Chimaev aka The Chechen Wolf will face his biggest test tonight against #2 ranked Gilbert Burns. Since he’s stepped foot into the UFC, he’s claimed he will smash everybody and so far he has. I think only one punch has landed on him and none of his fights have gone past the first round. Exciting shit.
Until next time…
So many interesting topics!! Great read from beginning to end!! Love the song w/ Carlos Santana on the guitar!! And Zendaya should get an Oscar for her constantly evolving portrayal of Rue!! Such a talented Actor!!
